It’s not that the money is much, compared to going to a film, if I were to play for like 4-6hrs a month, the money would be well worth it. My issue is the fact that it makes me feel that I’m losing something if I do not play for a week or even when I don’t find some opportunity to play a day. To add to the FOMO, there are the weekly and daily D&Ds which are a excellent time investment xp-wise (e.g. caches, sinkholes) I believe I am missing out on. What annoys me a bit is that RuneScape with microtransactions such as RS has a direct incentive to keep you playing. The further you wish to achieve a 99/120 and the longer you put in to RuneScape, the more likely you are to spend extra on in.
The freaking grindy nature of RuneScape. Sometimes it feels like the whole purpose of RuneScape would be to grind to get a level so then you can grind to find another one so then it is possible to grind to farm a monster for gp and so forth. Is this the fun? Grinding and feeling which you make progress in an environment much more structured than actual life? Additionally, as playing RS is so much effort, I do find myself getting cognitive dissonance (I really don’t like doing an activity, but I keep doing it because I believe I have already invested time/effort/money to it and I would be losing everything I stopped).
The simple fact that it is difficult to play it casually. I personally find this kind if AFK multitasking actually bad, because it gets me tired really fast (shifting attention from a task to another is particulary dull for individual beings) and it doesn’t allow me to love and immerse in my other activities, like work or chatting or watching YouTube. So unless I AFK my way through, I have to play a huge number of hours (at least) per month to make some significant progress in RuneScape.
I’m conscious that this can be subjective experience I’m talking about, but I am curious as to what do you guys think. I mean, can it be a structured more fun form of job that you pay to do or is there something in RuneScape that’s fun and enjoyable in itself (e.g. playing a certain minigame)?
RuneScape is the type of game where you have to make your own fun, nevertheless are surrounded by a great deal of individuals that want to push you to do things which aren’t fun and a great deal of game design that disturbs you to do chores, instead of have fun.
